Laos has a troubled history: first the French who forced all farmers to grow opium and thereby not only destroying their economy but also creating a serious addiction problem. Then the Americans who conducted one of the most destructive and unreported air raids in history, dropping more than 2 million ordnances over eastern Laos, crippling its population until today. Nowadays, Laos is a poor, undeveloped country with a socialist, authoritarian regime. Nevertheless, Laos also offers some of the most dramatic natural beauties on the planet: pristine, dense, lush jungles. Incredible limestone formations. The gigantic, fast flowing Mekong and the indescribable Kong Lor Cave.
